Turkey: Troop Deployments to Bashiqa: Ankara’s KRG Calculus

Turkey’s recent troop deployments in KRG territory – especially to the Gubud/Zilkan base near Bashiqa, east of Mosul – are neither a complete shock, as Iraqi officials claim, nor completely routine, as their Turkish counterparts assert. The Turkish presence there has existed since 2014 to train Mosul police officers associated with Athell Nujaifi, the ousted Nineveh province governor and a key Turkish ally.
