Turkey: The Future of Powertrans and Its KRG Oil Export License Monopoly

Powertrans’ rapid rise within the Turkish energy sector caught the industry’s attention when it was awarded the only oil trucking license for KRG oil. Former Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Taner Yildiz strongly supported the company due to Powertrans’ connections to then Prime Minister Erdogan through his son-in-law, Berat Albayrak. Other agencies, like the Ministry of Transportation and Communication and the National Intelligence Organization (MIT), also helped to smooth the regulatory hurdles that Powertrans faced. Now the political winds are changing, and Powertrans’ connections to Calik Corporation and Albayrak, its CEO, are working against the firm.
