Turkey: The End of the Zarrab Saga: Halkbank, Oil Money and Sanctions Evasion

The so-called “17-25 December process” in 2013 was one of the most critical turning points in recent Turkish politics. The one-week episode began when prosecutors affiliated with the political camp of exiled cleric Fethullah Gulen, raided the homes of a number of businessmen, bureaucrats and the sons of three ministers on 17 December. In the following days, wiretapped audio recordings leaked online featured major government officials, including then Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and members of his family, discussing bribery schemes.
