Turkey: Suruc Bombing: Suspected ISIL Retaliation for Turkish Crackdowns

On 20 July a suicide bomber allegedly linked to ISIL killed 32 people and wounded more than 100 in the Turkish town of Suruc, which lies across the Turkish-Syrian border from Kobani. The bombing targeted volunteers from the SGDF, a left-wing association of youth aid workers from around Turkey. The group had convened in Suruc to plan for Kobani’s reconstruction and was preparing to send aid and educational supplies to the town. As the primary suspect, ISIL may have intended to send a message to those working toward reconstruction and relief efforts in Kobani, but the attempt seems to have backfired.
