Turkey: Pentagon and Ministry of Foreign Affairs Officials Discuss Turkish Buffer Zone in Syria

On 7 July a US delegation led by the special presidential envoy for the Global Coalition to Counter the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), Gen. John Allen, and Under Secretary of Defense Christine Wormuth arrived in Ankara to discuss the prospects and mechanics of a buffer zone in Syria with their Turkish counterparts, including Ministry of Foreign Affairs Undersecretary Feridun Sinirlioglu. Notably, Ankara has unilaterally begun amassing troops and tanks along the Turkish-Syrian border, amid international debate over whether it will enter the country to create a buffer zone.
