Turkey: New Details of Ankara’s Rapprochement with Moscow

The last year has witnessed a dizzying number of developments in Turkish-Russian-relations. One key milestone came on 16 September, when Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs Undersecretary Feridun Sinirlioglu met with Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergei Lavrov in Sochi to discuss cooperation against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) and al-Nusra Front, with side discussions on shared positions regarding a post-Assad secular, democratic and non-sectarian government to preside over a unitary Syria. On 23 September Russian and Turkish Presidents Vladimir Putin and Recep Tayyip Erdogan spoke on the phone to cement the deal, but this fragile agreement was immediately rocked by Russia’s sudden announcement on 30 September that it had commenced airstrikes on Syria without informing Ankara beforehand.
