Turkey: Erdogan’s Distressed Reaction to Kurdish Gains in Syria

Assisted by US-led coalition airstrikes, on 15 June YPG forces entered Tal Abyad, a Syrian town across from Turkey’s Akcakale border crossing. The YPG, which is closer to the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) than the Syrian Kurdish political bloc, the Democratic Union Party (PYD), seized the town in conjunction with Syrian Arab rebel groups, cutting off ISIL’s main supply line from within Turkey. The fighting reportedly caused over 16,000 inhabitants of the town to flee to the Turkish border.
