Turkey: Election Results: A Surprise for the AKP

The 1 November elections yielded a surprising result, with the AKP regaining its single-party status by securing some 49.29% of the vote. Notably, all 26 of the opinion polls conducted between 7 June and 1 November failed to predict the AKP’s victory. In addition, of all Horizon’s interviews with AKP officials leading up to the elections predicted either winning or losing a single-party government by a slight margin of 42-44%, but nothing near the outcome that ensued; even senior AKP official Bulent Arinc conceded, “I must admit, I was not expecting anything above 45%.”
