Turkey: Eastern Mediterranean Energy Activity to Rise Despite Tensions

Last week Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Berat Albayrak reasserted Turkey’s willingness to continue gas exploration in the waters off the coast of Cyprus. He announced his ministry’s plan to buy a drillship to operate in Northern Cyprus’ exclusive economic zone (EEZ) and the Black Sea. Even before acquiring this new ship, Albayrak stated that Turkey will drill its first well in Northern Cyprus’ EEZ by either late Q3 or early Q4. He also introduced his ministry’s project to train a new generation of petroleum engineers that are proficient in 3D modelling, geospatial research and data science, demonstrating Turkey’s long-term interest in offshore exploration and drilling.
