Turkey: “Coup-Speak” Resurfaces: What’s Different This Time?

Prior to the attempted coup of 15 July 2016, there was talk of an imminent coup, referred to as “coup-speak.” After the attempt, both Prime Minister Binali Yildirim and President Erdogan insisted that a “second wave” of renewed attempts could take place, urging citizens to “flood the streets.” This “second wave” argument circulated for several weeks until some stability was attained within the military ranks. The government also reached a consensus to discontinue such talk.
