Turkey: Can the MHP Affect Turkey’s Relations with the KRG?

As Turkish public opinion toward the Kurdish peace process sours following the continued reluctance of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) to disarm and disband, support for nationalist parties such as the MHP has strengthened. Indeed, opinion polls after the 7 June general elections indicated that the majority of the AKP’s lost votes went to the MHP. Furthermore, the party’s political leverage is disproportionately influencing negotiations in the post-election coalition building process – all the more significant given that MHP leader Devlet Bahceli has called the peace process a “treason project.”
