Turkey: Ankara’s Apology to Moscow: Prospects for Energy Relations

In late June, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan formally apologized to his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, officially ending the rift between the two countries since Turkey’s downing of a Russian Sukhoi Su-24 fighter jet in late November 2015. Why Turkey shot down the Russian jet has been the subject of speculation over the last several months, with contradictory claims and accounts of what occurred. While some accounts link the incident to President Recep Tayyip Erdogan specifically ordering the shooting, others claim that the Turkish military deliberately chose to shoot down the jet to leave the president in a difficult position.
