South Africa: Zuma’s Turn to “Radical Economic Transformation”

President Jacob Zuma’s State of the Nation Address in parliament on 9 February was once again disrupted by opposition EFF MPs who have labeled Zuma an “illegitimate president” due to his violations of the constitution. The Democratic Alliance (DA) also walked out after an agreement over the deployment of the military to parliament, which is contrary to the principle of the separation of powers, was broken. Though ANC MPs continue to defend Zuma, opposition pressure is contributing to growing representation of Zuma as a lame duck as the ANC’s national conference in December draws closer.
