South Africa: Zuma’s Recovering Political Power

ANC Secretary General Gwede Mantashe announced on 31 May that the party’s branches had reaffirmed the National Working Committee’s decision not to recall President Jacob Zuma and to accept his so-called apology for failing to uphold his constitutional duties in connection with the public spending on his private residence at Nkandla. Mantashe, who was reporting back on the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting from 28-29 May, also stated that the ANC’s investigation into allegations of state capture by the Gupta family were “fruitless” after only one person was willing to provide a written statement. These developments underline that despite numerous controversies, Zuma remains firmly in control for now.
