South Africa: Zuma Faces Heightened Scrutiny and Pressure in 2016

Recent speculation has increasingly centered on the prospect of President Jacob Zuma’s possible removal this year, especially if the ANC performs poorly in the local government elections that will be held sometime between May and August. Undoubtedly, Zuma’s decision-making will be closely scrutinized in the coming months. In December, his already poor reputation was severely damaged by the debacle over his dismissal of Finance Minister Nhlanhla Nene, replacing him with David van Rooyen, and then replacing van Rooyen with Pravin Gordhan amid pressure from ANC leaders and market turmoil.
