South Africa: Xenophobic Attacks Underscore Domestic Challenges

On 20 April Minister of Defense Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula announced that the SANDF would be deployed to key areas to quell a spate of xenophobic attacks that have broken out in recent weeks, resulting in at least seven deaths. So far, the SANDF has been sent to parts of Johannesburg and Durban. The deployment, which is intended to bolster the police, is meant as a signal that the government is taking strong action to stop the violence. However, the government appears to have little idea as to how to deal with the underlying causes of the xenophobic attacks, which are directed at African immigrants in poorer communities.
