South Africa: Treasury Controversy Turns Spotlight on Zuma’s Advisors

President Jacob Zuma’s disastrous appointment of David van Rooyen as minister of finance on 9 December, and his subsequent removal from the Treasury portfolio days later in favor of Pravin Gordhan, has been roundly criticized both in and outside of South Africa. As the situation stabilizes, questions have been raised over Zuma’s decision-making, his advisors and who else within the ANC knew about the decision. The Gupta family close to Zuma appears to be central to the controversy, and they are increasingly seen as being representative of the patronage politics Zuma relies on to maintain his power.
