South Africa: Pressure Builds on Energy Minister Over Nuclear Deal

Minister of Energy Tina Joemat-Pettersson is coming under growing pressure after the recent revelation that she ignored the state law advisor and potentially signed a binding deal with Russia to procure nuclear reactors and an enrichment plant. Evidence that an agreement was signed emerged in legal proceedings between the Department of Energy and environmental groups opposed to the nuclear program. If the court finds that Joemat-Pettersson signed a deal without the required approval from parliament, there are likely to be calls for her to stand down. The controversy could also be used by President Jacob Zuma as motivation for replacing Joemat-Pettersson in a future reshuffle.
