South Africa: Nuclear Procurement: Impact and Implications for IOCs

On 14 July the Department of Energy and state-owned Necsa confirmed during a press briefing that the government plans to begin the process of selecting a strategic partner for its nuclear program next month. The government expects to complete the process by February 2016, but we believe delays are likely. Despite strong opposition, support from the highest levels of the government, and especially President Zuma, is driving the nuclear agenda. In addition to environmental and safety objections, there are major concerns over how the planned nuclear plants will be financed, particularly given the country’s weak economic position.
