South Africa: MPRDA Uncertainty to Continue Through August

On 4 May the National House of Traditional Leaders (NHTL) reported to the National Assembly’s Portfolio Committee on Mineral Resources on its submissions on the MPRDA Amendment Bill. Although the NTHL’s submissions, which included the establishment of an independent Mineral and Mining Development Council, are unlikely to be adopted or directly affect IOCs, they may impact the MPRDA’s processing. However, with parliament due to go on recess from 28 May to mid-August to allow MPs to prepare for the 3 August local elections, the bill will likely not be passed before September.
