South Africa: IRP Consensus Increases Pressure on Energy Department

The Department of Energy has faced considerable criticism during the public consultations on the 2016 update of the IRP and the Integrated Energy Plan (IEP). Various stakeholders, ranging from renewable energy companies to the Energy Intensive Users Group (EIUG), have made submissions reflecting the high degree of interest in the outcomes of the IRP and IEP processes. For IOCs, the public consultation hearings provide some useful insights into the views of other stakeholders. Apart from some outliers – such as the Fossil Fuel Foundation, which is calling for greater consideration of moves to reduce South Africa’s reliance on coal – there appears to be growing cross-sector support for a more flexible approach that includes renewables and gas.
