South Africa: Implications of the ANC’s Declining Support

Advances by the opposition Democratic Alliance (DA) in the 3 August local elections have confirmed the decline in the dominance of the ANC, which has controlled most political structures since the first democratic elections in 1994. As more competitive politics will likely improve accountability and reduce the high levels of mismanagement and corruption that have increasingly characterized ANC strongholds, this development should be welcomed by IOCs. There are several important trends from the local elections that will influence politics ahead of the national elections in 2019.
