South Africa: Fracking Regulations Challenge May Raise Questions Over Offshore Framework

On 27 November two civil society groups opposed to the exploration for onshore gas in the Karoo Basin announced they had launched a legal challenge to the Regulations for Petroleum Exploration and Production published in June. TKAG and AfriForum argue that the regulations are inappropriate and vague. Their legal challenge will escalate the debate over hydraulic fracturing, which is dealt with in the regulations, and onshore gas development, which has experienced major community opposition.
