South Africa: Eskom Escalates Dispute over IPPs

State-owned power utility Eskom recently signaled that it wants to enter into discussions with the Department of Energy over the IPP program. According to Business Day, Eskom chairman Ben Ngubane stated in a letter to Minister of Energy Tina Joemat-Pettersson that the company will not sign further power purchaser agreements without engagement on the issue. This development will raise significant concerns over the implications for IPP programs and create major investor uncertainty.
