South Africa: Dlamini-Zuma’s Return Will Escalate Succession Debate

Senior ANC politician Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma is due to stand down as chairwoman of the AU at the 27th AU Summit to be held in Kigali, Rwanda between 10 and 18 July. Her return to South Africa will intensify speculation over her possible bid to succeed her former husband, President Jacob Zuma, as ANC president at the party’s national conference in December 2017. Dlamini-Zuma has already been spending increasing time in South Africa, particularly in KwaZulu-Natal province, campaigning for the party ahead of local elections on 3 August.
