South Africa: CBM Update: Projects Face Obstacles

CBM attracts relatively little attention in South Africa, especially in comparison to shale gas, other regional resources, such as those in Mozambique, and even LNG. This is in part due to significantly lower resource estimates for CBM. The Petroleum Agency of South Africa (PASA), for example, estimates CBM resources at around 10 tcf, while shale gas reserve estimates range from PASA’s 40 tcf to the US Energy Information Administration’s (EIA) 390 tcf. However, despite these lower estimates, there are a number of CBM projects under consideration in the country.
