South Africa: Blow to Ramaphosa’s Succession Prospects

Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa’s chances of succeeding Jacob Zuma as ANC president at the party’s national conference in December 2017 suffered a blow on 8 November with the election of Sihle Zikalala as ANC chairman in KwaZulu-Natal province. Zikalala’s election, which saw him defeat incumbent chairman and KwaZulu-Natal premier Senzo Mchunu by 780 votes to 675 votes, puts him in a powerful position ahead of the 2017 national conference.
