South Africa: ANC Succession Race Heats Up

The debate over who should succeed President Jacob Zuma has erupted with renewed vigor in 2017, despite attempts by the ANC leadership to calm speculation. On 7 January the ANC Women’s League stated that AU chairwoman Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma would be the “only suitable candidate.” ANC chairwoman and speaker of the National Assembly Baleka Mbete followed by announcing that she too would be interested in the ANC presidency. Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa, who has been endorsed by the ANC’s alliance partner, the Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu), is also in the race, and we expect others to show their interest in coming months.
