South Africa: ANC Further Divided After Court Finding

On 31 March the Constitutional Court handed down a devastating judgment against President Jacob Zuma and the National Assembly. The opposition Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) had petitioned the court to affirm that the Public Protector’s findings and remedial action proposed against Zuma over his use of public funds on security upgrades at his private residence at Nkandla were legally binding. The court’s ruling that Zuma’s noncompliance with the Public Protector’s remedial action was inconsistent with his constitutional obligations will provide considerable ammunition to ANC members opposed to his continued leadership of the party.
