South Africa: Alliance Summit Underscores Internal Challenges

The five-day summit between alliance partners Cosatu, the ANC and SACP ended on 1 July with optimistic pronouncements from ANC Secretary General Gwede Mantashe that the event represented a turning point for the alliance. Unsurprisingly, the summit appears to have devoted significant time to the divisions both between alliance partners and specifically within Cosatu. Despite the talk of unity and the support given to the ANC government on hot topics such as the role of the judiciary, the summit is unlikely to result in a significantly different dynamic between the partners.
