South Africa: 2017: Action-Packed Year for the Energy Sector

2017 promises to be an eventful year for the South African oil and gas sector. Parliament will likely finalize the much-delayed MPRDA Amendment Bill, the LNG independent power producer (IPP) program could see pre-qualified bidders announced, and the forecast in the updated 2016 draft of the IRP may provide a boost for the long-term development of the gas sector. Yet each of these initiatives will likely suffer from further delays and possible legal challenges, which will reinforce the regulatory uncertainty that has frustrated IOCs in recent years. Furthermore, the ANC’s national conference in December 2017 will dominate the 2017 political agenda.
