Russia: Novatek Erodes Gazprom’s Pipeline Export Monopoly

Energy Minister Alexander Novak recently endorsed Novatek’s request to enable sales of its pipeline gas to Europe. Novatek had proposed selling gas to the customers of its European trading subsidiary established in 2012; this gas, which is currently sourced in Norway, can be replaced by the gas from Arcticgas, the fast-growing Yamal joint venture between Novatek and Gazprom Neft. President Putin will now make the final decision whether to grant Novatek the right to export gas. On 2 March his press secretary, Dmitriy Peskov, suggested that Novatek’s request has not yet been approved.
