Gazprom and Rosneft: Competition, Rivalry and Implications for IOCs

Russia’s two state-controlled energy companies will continue their pursuit of partnerships with foreign firms after President Vladimir Putin’s re-election in March 2018. However, relations between the two companies are competitive and sometimes confrontational. Foreign firms have been unable to strike deals with both Gazprom and Rosneft simultaneously and will have to navigate around the rivalry that will continue to dominate Russia’s energy arena in the coming years.
Horizon’s new study explores the relations between Gazprom and Rosneft both in Russia and abroad, focusing on the personalities of the companies’ CEOs and the strategies they will pursue in the medium term.
