Mozambique: Renamo Boycotts Government as New Parliament Takes Shape

On 30 December the Constitutional Court confirmed the results of the 15 October general elections in favor of Frelimo and its presidential candidate, Filipe Jacinto Nyusi. While the certification is no surprise, the announcement had been repeatedly delayed due to Renamo’s adamant allegations of electoral fraud and implicit threats of violence if the results were not annulled. While Renamo leader Afonso Dhlakama continues to insist that he and his party won the election, the court ruling paved the way for Nyusi’s inauguration and the formation of parliament and the government.
