Mozambique: Prospects for Power-Sharing with Renamo

Since international mediators’ return to Mozambique on 8 August for the talks between Renamo and government, violence has again escalated: attacks have been reported from Niassa, Tete, Zambezia, Manica and Inhambane provinces over the past week. Despite this resurgence in violence, and the mediators’ apparent inability to bring the two sides to a cease-fire, not all aspects of the talks have been negative. On 11 August the two sides discussed the top issue for Renamo: the creation of some sort of political autarky in the provinces where the party won majorities in the 2014 general elections, including Sofala, Manica, Zambezia, Nampula, Tete and Niassa.
