Mozambique: Pressure on Nyusi Increases as Renamo Escalates Violence

Tensions between Renamo and government forces in central Tete province have continued to escalate over the past month and erode the fragile peace between the two sides, with violent clashes breaking out in the province on 14 and 23 June and then on 3 and 4 July. Just last week, local media reported that up to 24 Armed Forces for the Defense of Mozambique (FADM) and Rapid Intervention Police Units (UIR) troops died in clashes in the vicinity of Chiabaene, Tete province on 17 and 18 July.
