Mozambique: Nyusi’s State of the Nation: Consolidating Power in 2016?

On 16 December President Filipe Nyusi gave his first state of the nation address to the AR, nearly 11 months to the day after he ascended to the presidency following his win in the general elections in October 2014. Nyusi noted that he is “brave enough” to say that his government is “not yet satisfied” with the state of the nation in his speech, which has widely been seen as an honest take on his first year in power. Aside from announcing Christmas amnesty for 1,000 prisoners – which was well received by the public – his speech covered a number of themes related to the country’s economic and fiscal situation, political stability and security.
