Mozambique: Nyusi Cedes to IMF Audit Demands

On 15 September the long-awaited meeting between President Filipe Nyusi and IMF Managing Director Christine Lagarde took place in Washington, D.C. After the anticipation that preceded it, the meeting, which ended after only 30 minutes, was somewhat of an anticlimax. There were no heated arguments; instead, Nyusi accepted the IMF’s demand for an international audit of Mozambique’s sovereign debt. Lagarde in turn welcomed the government’s willingness to work with the IMF as well as the initial steps for agreed-upon policies and reforms.
