Mozambique: New Central Bank Governor: Nyusi Seeks to Placate the IMF

President Filipe Nyusi is under unprecedented strain: The conflict with Renamo has been escalating despite the presence of foreign mediators, and his handling of the economy has been mostly ineffective. Nyusi faces growing pressure from competitors within Frelimo, and his inaugural promise to end violence, corruption and economic mismanagement has rung increasingly hollow. Relations with the international donor community led by the IMF are at an all-time low as a result of the country’s crushing sovereign debt levels and looming bankruptcy.
