Mozambique: Implications of Renewed Violence

On 23 June Renamo leader Afonso Dhlakama took responsibility for clashes that broke out between the Armed Forces for the Defense of Mozambique (FADM) and Renamo forces near Mucombeze/Moatize in Tete province on 14 June, stating, “I cannot hide the fact that I ordered the attack.” Though details have yet to be confirmed, some Renamo sources have claimed that 45 FADM soldiers were left dead after the clashes, while the government has confirmed one casualty. Unconfirmed reports of further clashes near Moatize on 23 June are further cause for concern, as is the arrest of a man allegedly belonging to Renamo on the same day in possession of 46 AKM assault rifles.
