On 15 April IMF African Department Director Antoinette Sayeh announced the cancellation of the fund’s mission to Mozambique scheduled for this week. The mission was intended to initiate discussions for a review of the IMF’s support to Mozambique through its PSI and SCF. Effectively, Sayeh’s announcement means that the IMF will suspend loans to Mozambique until further notice. Rumors were rife in the country over the weekend that the World Bank had also suspended its cooperation with Mozambique through the International Development Association (IDA) financing. However, the World Bank’s country director for Mozambique, Mark Lundell, has denied this rumor.
