Mozambique: Growing Religious Tensions in the North: Signposts for IOCs

On 5 November an FIR police contingent was dispatched to the Muslim-majority coastal village of Pangane in Cabo Delgado province to restore order after a local police officer was killed in religious unrest. The outburst of violence in Pangane, which lies halfway between Pemba and Palma, was the result of a local Muslim leader issuing a ban on alcohol in the village, causing local merchants to call the police once youths began collecting and destroying all alcohol there. The leader’s prompt arrest infuriated much of the population, which tried to prevent their leader from being taken away.
