In the early hours of 9 October Renamo leader Afonso Dhlakama’s residence in Beira, Sofala province was surrounded by Rapid Intervention Units (UIR) and special forces from the national police, shortly after the mediators present there had left. Dhlakama had arrived at his residence late on 8 October after having been in hiding since 25 September and was accompanied by his armed personal guard of 12 or so Renamo soldiers. A standoff ensued, in which government forces demanded that Dhlakama’s personal guard hand over all weapons in their possession. When they did not do so, the forces stormed the building with no resistance. There were no shots fired and no casualties reported.
