Mozambique: Fuel Price Hikes Increase Protest Threat

On 30 September the Ministry for Mineral Resources and Energy announced a fuel price hike of 24% for diesel and 6% for petrol, effective from 1 October. The new price for petrol is 50.02 meticais ($0.63) per liter, up three meticais, and the new price for diesel is 45.82 meticais ($0.58), up nine meticais. The ministry justified the price hike on the grounds that the cost of imports has risen. The government also stated that the increase is part of a package of measures designed to bring fuel prices into line with actual market costs.
