Mozambique: Frelimo Power Struggle Spills Out into the Open

On 20 January Renamo Secretary General Manuel Bissopo was shot in broad daylight in Beira, Sofala province, in an attack that killed his bodyguard and left him hospitalized in stable condition in South Africa. The incident occurred shortly after Bissopo gave a press conference denouncing the state security forces for allegedly committing atrocities in their fight against Renamo, including punishing civilians in Tete province for supporting and harboring Renamo forces. According to Renamo, soldiers from the Armed Forces for the Defense of Mozambique (FADM) as well as members of the Rapid Intervention Force (FIR) have burned civilians’ homes in retaliation, causing deaths.
