Mozambique: Frelimo Central Committee Session: Tensions beneath the Surface

On 16 April the fifth session of the Frelimo Central Committee ended in Matola after four days of deliberations. The committee’s agenda was dominated by current affairs and included discussions of Renamo, public financial management, Mozambique’s sovereign debt and corruption. With its 197 members, the Central Committee is the supreme organ of the ruling party, aside from the party congresses that occur every five years. The committee’s latest session is significant as it is the first ordinary session which is led by Nyusi in his capacity of president of the party.
