Despite the high expectations that followed the arrival of international mediators in Maputo at the end of July, hopes for a quick peace deal have been dashed. Already, the talks got off to a bad start on 23 July and were frozen. After a brief respite, the mediators departed Maputo on 27 July. While the obstacles to peace are clearly greater than the mediators expected, they are set to return to Mozambique on 8 August. However, this is contingent on the cessation of violence and military action from both sides, and this date could easily be delayed.
