Mexico: Security Outlook in Tabasco State

The successful second auction of Round One was welcomed with enthusiasm by the Mexican government and some private sector players, as it showed that the executive branch – albeit slowly – is learning how to establish the conditions for an open energy market in Mexico. This outcome is a positive signal ahead of the third auction of Round One scheduled for 15 December, which will include 19 onshore mature fields. However, in the interim security trends are not encouraging, especially in the state of Tabasco, which is usually absent from headlines on violence and crime. Tabasco state is located in southeastern Mexico and is rich in hydrocarbons.
