Mexico: Gonzalez’s Year at Pemex: Accomplishments and Challenges

A little more than a year ago, on 7 February 2016, President Enrique Pena Nieto announced the resignation of Pemex CEO Emilio Lozoya Austin and the appointment of Jose Antonio Gonzalez Anaya to head the country’s largest company.

Gonzalez had a bumpy start as Pemex’s CEO. Less than a month after his appointment, he had his first hearing before the Chamber of Deputies’ Energy Commission. Federal deputies criticized his lack of expertise in the oil and gas sector, as well as problems inherited from Lozoya’s tenure.
