Libya: Zintan’s Place in Libya’s New Order

From late 2011 until summer 2014, the small mountain town of Zintan enjoyed outsized influence in western Libya, considering its population of only 50,000. The town’s influence was mainly due to what Zintani militias controlled in Tripoli, including the international airport and other strategic sites they seized after entering the capital as it fell to rebel forces in summer 2011.
